What’s More Likely: Herbert Beats Bills or Jameis Balls Out for the Giants?

Rich couldn't wait until Friday. He had a "What's More Likely" in his pocket and delivered it a day early, pitting two long-shot redemption stories against each other for Week 3.

Option one: the Chargers go into Buffalo and do exactly what Rich manifested earlier in the show. The Monday morning headline is that Justin Herbert "out-dueled Josh Allen or looked him straight in the eye and they had the ball last and they won."

The alternative: the Giants beat the Titans at home because Jameis Winston "looks so good," a totally different guy from six days earlier. Rich painted the picture: Jameis "lit him up for 350, three tuddies, offense looked great, and literally hold the phone on all the trade talk and conversation." He also noted the Titans were not exactly a get-right team at home against Philadelphia the week before.

TJ Jefferson went first and made his loyalties clear. "Brother, I would love it as a Jameis Winston Florida State fan," he said. He doesn't love framing it as one quarterback out-dueling another, but he laid out his math anyway. In his view, Jameis has a better shot at winning his quarterback matchup with Tennessee "than there is for Justin Herbert to out-duel Josh Allen." TJ's pick: Jameis leads the Giants to a win.

The other side of the studio wasn't buying it. "No. Herbert."

Rich asked whether seeing Jameis with his own two eyes had turned that vote off entirely. The answer was yes. "It was pretty brutal," came the reply. The explanation was specific. Running scout team all week and getting thrown in is hard, and if Jameis had been airmailing throws, that would read as a timing issue with receivers and reps. That's not what happened. "Everything was underthrown, short hop, he was getting pressured."

So the Herbert case was a reset. "It's more likely that the Chargers go in and on Monday we're like, okay, they're back. First two weeks, throw it out. Things clicked. Herbert's still Herbert."

The Jameis camp had one more card to play: the story. "We all love stories, right?" came the pitch. The world fell in love with Jameis this summer during the World Cup, with video of him in the stands cleaning up alongside the Japanese team. "It would just make such a great worldwide story if Jameis could get it together."

Then came a reminder that Jameis once lit it up in the snow as a Cleveland Brown. So is that guy not walking through the door?

Nobody settled it. Rich simply let it hang, and teased that Friday's What's More Likely might grow out of this one. "Does that give you an idea? Little kernel?"
