The Athletic’s Mike Vorkunov on the Big Mystery Surrounding LeBron’s Next Decision

The best explanation anyone has offered for the LeBron James free agency blackout came from a wrestling documentary.

Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic told the show he had been watching the Netflix behind-the-scenes series about WWE, specifically the episode covering guest host Seth Rollins and his storyline, when a line jumped out at him. Triple H says only eight people know.

"And I think with LeBron, I think there's like three guys who know," Vorkunov said. "And I think anyone else is probably lying to you."

That is the honest state of it. Vorkunov was blunt that he has no information, and his read is that almost nobody does.

"They've done a great job of just like keeping it under wraps," he said.

His list of plausible destinations is long and unsatisfying by design: Philadelphia, Cleveland, Miami, maybe the Warriors, maybe Minnesota. What makes the exercise interesting is the contract. James is expected to sign for the minimum or something close to it, which changes the math for every team on that list.

"He'll be one of the best values in the NBA no matter where he chooses," Vorkunov said.

Not all of those landing spots do the same thing, though. Vorkunov separated them cleanly. Philadelphia, Cleveland and Minnesota get picked up into title contender status the moment he signs. Miami and Golden State are more complicated paths to the Finals.

The Miami question is the one that started the segment. Chris had argued that James would be a nonfactor there, a take that apparently made its way to James himself. Vorkunov said he sat through a live pod taping at Fanatics Fest where James mentioned that someone on social media said he would make a play-in team, and Vorkunov assumed the man was inventing haters out of thin air for talking points.

Now he knows where it came from.

For the record, Vorkunov thinks the play-in framing goes a step too far. The East is genuinely crowded, with something like 10 teams believing they can grab a top-six seed, and Miami has a real question about who handles the ball. But he does not see the floor being that low.

"I think if you have Giannis and you have Bam and you have LeBron, they'll be able to figure it out," he said.

The waiting game has a second layer. Reports suggest James is watching to see whether Anthony Davis or Kyrie Irving gets moved, and Vorkunov does not doubt he would like the company. He is skeptical it happens.

"I don't know why those teams would be motivated to trade those two good players," he said, noting that it is late July and most of the offseason business is already done.

So who is actually under pressure here? Not the teams. If James is taking the minimum or fitting into an exception, nobody has to clear cap space or move bodies.

The answer, per Vorkunov, is the league office. The schedule normally comes out in mid-August, built by running algorithms and iterations to get the right teams on Christmas Day and opening week, and every one of those decisions bends around where James signs.

"You can't change the schedule after it's been sent out," Vorkunov said.

The desk was not buying the sob story. If the league has plugged in the handful of teams still in play, it already has a schedule for each scenario ready to go. Just press the button.
