The Athletic’s Mike Vorkunov on Which Team Is LeBron James’ Best Fit

There are two different questions buried inside the LeBron James free agency watch, and Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic split them apart cleanly.

Where is the best basketball fit? And where is the best chance to win a title? Those are not the same answer.

"I think there's a really good argument that the best basketball fit might be in Minnesota," Vorkunov said, pointing to a roster with Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert, Jaden McDaniels and LaMelo Ball.

The problem with Minnesota is geography. The Spurs and Oklahoma City are still out west, and that complicates the path to the Finals long before anyone talks about winning one.

"It's just a little bit easier in the East," Vorkunov said.

From there he walked the eastern options. The Knicks are a great team and just won the title, but the conference does not have the same volume of top-end rosters. Philadelphia becomes immediately interesting with James added. So does Cleveland, a team that already reached the Eastern Conference finals last season.

Miami got a qualified endorsement. Vorkunov and the desk had disagreed about the Heat earlier in the show, but he was willing to say that adding James to that group gets them closer to being a Finals contender.

His summary is the cleanest framing anyone has put on this decision.

"To maximize the best team, he'd probably go out west," Vorkunov said. "But to maximize his title chances, it's probably East somewhere."

The show also raised a wrinkle sitting off to the side. James Harden and Draymond Green are still technically free agents. Does that factor in?

Vorkunov does not think it changes James's calculus so much as it changes the paperwork.

"There's nowhere Draymond Green can go at this point," he said. "James Harden, there's nowhere he's going to go at this point. It's really just, if I'm coming back to those two teams, it's for how much and how long and what's that contract going to look like."

In other words, those deals are downstream of the James decision, not upstream of it. Teams need to know whether they are getting him before they know what they can pay everyone else.

The most encouraging takeaway had nothing to do with any specific city. What Vorkunov described is a league where there is no single obvious super team to join, and that is a good thing for anyone who has to watch the season.

The desk made the comparison directly. This is not Kevin Durant joining a Warriors team that was already a perennial championship favorite. This is a league where the parity is real enough that James could slide into a contender in either conference and meaningfully move the needle without breaking anything.

That is why the wait is worth something. Every one of these destinations produces a different top of the standings.
