The proof came Sunday night at Arrowhead in an overtime win over an Indianapolis team Rich described as desperate on every front: "desperate to prove week one was an outlier, desperate to prove that they have a championship squad, desperate to take this national TV audience and show everybody all of the above."

Start with Patrick Mahomes, who Rich said looks "as good as he's ever looked" early in his 2026 season, like "he didn't have a single thing repaired in his leg." The numbers backed it up: 382 passing yards and three touchdowns, the 19th career game with that stat line, tying Dan Marino for the fifth most all time. "And he just turned 30," Rich said. "That works."

Travis Kelce was right there with him. Rich noted it was Kelce's 27th career game, including the playoffs, with 100 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown, tying Gronk for the most by a tight end in NFL history. Kelce also has 120 yards after the catch this season, the most through the first two games of a season in his career. When he scored, he pointed to his ring finger, and Taylor Swift reacted with "That's my husband." Rich loved it. "People have so much Chiefs fatigue, they even have Taylor Swift fatigue," he said. "I don't know how you have that, quite frankly."

The Colts did plenty of damage of their own. Rich pushed back on the idea that Kenneth Walker III is the best back in football, because Jonathan Taylor "is as good as he's ever been, and he was running away from people." Daniel Jones was making plays too. Kansas City kept absorbing hits and throwing them back, and the game went to overtime.

That's where it got strange. The Colts won the toss and deferred, which in overtime hands the decision to the other side. Mahomes explained it afterward. "You can't defer in overtime," he said. "If you defer that then it's my decision, you know? So, then I was like, well, then I want to kick off." The Chiefs have "a guy named Fraser that tells us the rules," he added.

Rich had a message for the conspiracy crowd. "For all y'all out there with Chiefs fatigue, I don't want to hear it anymore that the refs are in the Chiefs pocket," he said, because the officials in Arrowhead on Sunday night could have simply let the game end. Mahomes sounded relieved too. "I didn't want to see Twitter's reaction if they would have called it a fumble," he said. "So that we got to prove it the right way, get the stop there, and then go back out there and get a field goal."

What Rich didn't get was what came next. After the aggressive shot, Indianapolis ran the ball a couple of times, then faced fourth and eight and for a split second looked like it might go for it before sending out the kicker. Steichen said it came down to the look. "If it's not the right look, like shoot, let's kick a field goal here," he said. Rich also wants a longer overtime. "Give me 5 more minutes so we could see more changes of possession," he said, though he understands the league's regular-season logic.

Their receivers are balling out," he said. "Kelce looks as revitalized as ever. And Mahomes looks like he didn't have a single ounce of surgery."
