Drake Maye was balling out against the New York Jets, and nobody in the studio was happier about it than Chris.
Rich opened with the obvious question for the show's resident Patriots fan: that was an interesting one, wasn't it? It was. Maye torched a Jets defense that Rich insisted is no joke, the Patriots improved to 4-2, and Chris got to bask in it.
Credit to the other side first. Rich wanted to know how good Jets defender David Bailey is. "He's great," Chris said, noting Bailey forced a fumble on TreVeyon Henderson. Later, Chris added that Bailey is "a beast."
The Jets' biggest problem was fourth and short. Rich counted the times they went for it and came up empty, including one sequence where they went for it three straight times, with somebody not named Braelon Allen. Then they tried to sneak it with Geno Smith from almost two yards out. The scouting report from the studio was blunt: "Pats cannot tackle Braelon Allen."
Then there was A.J. Brown, back in the lineup after six weeks. The verdict on his return was "rusty," and one voice in the studio said they would be shocked if Brown had four more drops the rest of the season. Rich offered TJ the over/under. TJ, watching intently because he has Brown in fantasy, took the over.
That turned into a back-and-forth over the old Philadelphia narrative about whose fault things were. Was it Jalen's? Was it Brown's? Rich pressed on whether that meant Brown was the problem all along. The answer was that this was only about the future. "I'm saying we're going to find out, won't we?"
The main event was Maye. Chris offered what he described as a compliment that, Rich noted, wasn't starting out that well. The first three weeks of the season are over for Maye, Chris said, and he has no idea where that guy came from or where he went. "He was possessed. He was possessed by the ghost of Brian Hoyer," Chris said. Someone else offered the ghost of Zach Wilson. Either way, Chris admitted, "It was bad for us. It was so bad."
Whoever that early-season Maye was, he's gone. Maybe, someone suggested, he's in Widow's Bay.
The current version is something else. Maye now has three passing touchdowns in three straight games. The last Patriot to do it? Tom Brady, back in 2017. And he did it against a Jets defense that Rich said is clearly really good.
Then the cleanest numbers of all. How many times was Maye sacked on Sunday? Zero. How many times did he turn it over? Zero. "He looked amazing," came the reply.
Rich's closing read on his co-host was simple: you've got to be thrilled. "Extremely," Chris said.
