Chris Webber: How the ‘Nova Knicks’ Chemistry Gives NY on On-Court Advantage

Rich finally asked Chris Webber the question that fit him perfectly. As a member of the Fab Five, Webber knows what it means to chase a title with college teammates, so how much does the Nova Knicks bond, the Villanova trio of Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart, actually show up in a game like Game 1 of the Finals?

The question hit a nerve, in the best way. For his entire career, Webber said, in conversations with general managers and coaches and now as a consultant, he has preached the value of relationships, and he feels vindicated watching this Knicks team.

He framed it with an analogy from his own next chapter. Everyone on a broadcast wears the same jersey with a different name on the back, and the work goes better when you actually trust and like the people beside you, when you hold each other accountable. Teams, he argued, do not value that enough. When you have played with someone in college, high school or AAU and chased the same dream, you are not secretly competing, because your check is already signed. It goes back to the schoolyard, to history and accountability, and New York has put it on display. A general manager even told Webber earlier this season, with a laugh, that maybe he had been right all along.

Rich granted that it helps to have one of the three turn generationally brilliant, the kind of run that could end in a statue if Brunson wins three more games. Webber agreed, but flipped it. Even if Brunson never made another shot, he asked, do you trust his effort? The answer is yes, and that trust is the whole point.

Webber does believe Brunson is generational. He noted, though, that Brunson scored just as much in Dallas without that label, and it took a coach like Tom Thibodeau, teammates with matching toughness, and a city amplifying him to make it undeniable. Brunson would have been great anywhere, Webber said, but he suspects Brunson would admit how much the surroundings matter.

The proof, for Webber, was a moment that went around the internet: the live video of Brunson learning his college teammates were being traded to join him, his joy completely genuine when a fan showed him the news. You cannot quantify, Webber said, what it means to chase a dream with your friends at your side.
