Chris Webber: Game 4 Collapse Will Diminish Spurs in Eyes of Their West Rivals

Chris Webber thinks the Spurs' Game 4 collapse will shrink them in their rivals' eyes for one simple reason: in basketball, you are your reputation, and that meltdown is now the freshest evidence of who San Antonio really is.

"You are your reputation, what you kept doing," Webber told Rich. "This is the only kind of evidence of who they are, so you're going to rely on that."

The collapse Webber is reacting to was historic. As Rich laid out, the Spurs scored 76 points in the first half and just 30 in the second at Madison Square Garden, the largest point differential between halves in NBA playoff history. A minus-46 swing. Never happened before.

For Webber, that kind of film doesn't fade. It tells opposing players exactly where to push. "Other guards are going to attack differently," he said, suggesting the rest of the West will no longer assume San Antonio's guards are as reliable as their reputation implied. The narrative resets, he argues, and with it the question of who is actually the best team in the conference heading into next season.

Rich pressed him on whether this really changes how the Nuggets, Lakers and Timberwolves view the Spurs. Webber narrowed it down. "I think it changes the way players do," he said, because players carry the receipts even when front offices talk a bigger game.

Then Webber pivoted to the team he thinks got the wrong lesson from all of this: Oklahoma City. He's adamant they shouldn't second-guess their roster, and specifically not Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. "I've always said that I'm not trading Shai," Webber said, pointing to his "unique body type" and two-way ability. He believes OKC only leaned on Shai for big scoring nights out of necessity when players were hurt, and that a healthy version of that team is fine as-is.

His read on OKC's mindset was blunt and confident: "We had a little down season and we were hurt, but we'll be right back at the top because these guys don't know what it takes."

That's the throughline. One bad half rewrites how everyone sees you. And in Webber's world, the players never forget what they watched.
