Chris Brockman: Do NOT Take the Jet Lagged 49ers in Your Survivor Pool Week2!

The 49ers are going to be a very popular Survivor pick this week. Chris Brockman has one piece of advice about that: don't.

The warning came with no disrespect for what San Francisco showed in Australia. One member of The Rich Eisen Show desk was lucky enough to see the Niners and Rams live down under, and came away surprised at the show the 49ers put on, the same way the Giants surprised people in Week 1.

The big story was the defense, and more specifically who was back on it. "It was so nice to see their healthy guys back on the field," came the report. Fred Warner was "just flying around," clearly amped up to be back, and he was unstoppable. Nick Bosa was out there too.

That matters because of what this team did without them. By the end of last year the 49ers were missing so many players, and they still went 12-5 without their starting quarterback for most of the season and put together a nice playoff run. "When Warner is healthy and when Nick Bosa is healthy, this team, they are a contender. No doubt about it."

The complication is something that does not show up on an injury report. Jet lag.

Kyle Shanahan was asked how his team is handling the trip home, and he was refreshingly honest about himself. "I think we're totally good now," he said. "I mean, speaking for myself, I felt like crap all weekend. We had two days off and I did not feel right. Took a couple days. I think I was good by Monday." Some players felt fine right away, he added, others went through the same thing, "but I think we're definitely all good by now."

The desk member who made the same trip was a little less recovered. "So, they're fine. They're fine. I'm not," came the admission, along with a plan for one day of hibernation. The rest of the desk pointed out, fairly, that this person is not playing football.

That set up the number. The 49ers are 13.5 point favorites against Miami, and Brockman sees the trap. "I don't think you want anything to do with the Niners this week," he said. "Look, they might win and they might blow them out, but as we saw last week with the Chargers and the Cardinals, just don't take a chance."

He had alternatives ready. Maybe the Chargers this week. The Ravens at home. The Bucs at home. All of them safer Survivor picks, in his view, and he applied the same logic to anyone thinking about laying 13.5 points. "I think the jet lag is real. I'd be pretty worried about San Francisco this week again. Maybe not to lose, but this game I think is going to be much closer than people think."

The desk offered some pushback. The 49ers have had extra rest coming out of the Australia game, and the Dolphins offensive line was described as "no bueno." Shanahan also said his team is fine, though the desk suspected that might just be a coach refusing to admit time zones exist. Does he flip his hair when he says it? According to the desk, he does.

One more piece of news made it in before the segment ended. The 49ers lost tight end Jake Tonges for the season after he tried to kick Myles Garrett. "That's not a smart thing to do," the desk agreed. The advice from there was the same as the Survivor advice. Be smarter than that.
