There is a new team on top of Rich's power rankings, and it is the one that keeps losing players and keeps winning anyway: the San Francisco 49ers.
Heading into Week 5, Rich admitted a lot of teams went from 1-2 to 2-2 and saved their seasons. Only one of them made his list. Here is the full top 10, with Rich's reasoning.
10. Las Vegas Raiders (3-1). Rich kept them right where they were despite the loss to Kansas City. The Raiders had the Chiefs in their house with a lead and five minutes to go, "and then the old Raiders stuff happened": a crushing special teams fumble, followed by Kenneth Walker calling game. Rich also refused to hold it against Klint Kubiak for saying on a hot mic that they were going to win. "I'm going to focus on the fact that he has got them playing really good football, complementary football," Rich said. Next up is a trip east to face the Patriots.
9. Los Angeles Rams (2-2). The one 2-2 team on the list, and Rich was not interested in debate. "I don't care what you think," he said. "The 2-2 Rams are ninth on this list because they are that good." He pointed to Kyren Williams as a difference maker, along with Puka, Davante Adams and their quarterback. A voice in the studio countered that the Falcons have had the best offense in the league the last two weeks. Rich is still taking the Rams.
8. Chicago Bears. Up one spot. "This guy Ben Johnson just keeps on clicking his pen, doesn't he?" Rich said. "And then the offense keeps clicking. Doesn't matter who's out there." With D'Andre Swift banged up, Kyle Monangai handled 30 carries, and Rich noted that at some point Caleb is coming back.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars. Also up one spot, and heading to London. Rich believes Trevor Lawrence "is just a different guy now" with Liam Coen in the headset, in his grill and in his film sessions. Defensively, he said, the Jaguars get after you and take the ball away.
6. Buffalo Bills. Down five spots after sitting atop the rankings for quite some time. Rich went back and forth and almost slotted them above Baltimore, but he could not drop the Ravens a spot after a win. "It's just the way I do my business," he said.
5. Baltimore Ravens. No change.
4. Minnesota Vikings (4-0). This one came with a caveat. Rich said that if the Vikings played the Ravens, Bills, Jaguars, Bears or Rams right now, he might take the other side because of how the offense looks under Kyler Murray. "It's not pretty watching him do it," he said. But the defense keeps throwing everybody out of the club, and Rich thinks the Vikings are ready "to make the poor man's Josh Allen even poorer" against the Saints. One member of the crew predicted a Vikings loss.
3. Seattle Seahawks. Up three spots. The defending Super Bowl champs did not look great in the final throws against the Chargers, Rich said, but they bounced back, and he cannot wait for their home game against the 49ers.
2. Kansas City Chiefs. Up one spot, and on a bye.
1. San Francisco 49ers (4-0). The new No. 1. When the crew said they were stunned the Chiefs were not first, Rich asked why he would leapfrog Kansas City over a team that is 4-0 and keeps losing players and chugging along anyway. "If I'm Deebo Samuel, I never leave the warm embrace of a Kyle Shanahan coached offense the rest of my life," Rich said. He also called Brock Purdy the best at the position through the first month, and noted Kyle had his fine rescinded. "Wins all around," came the reply.
The team that fell off: the Denver Broncos. "I'm not seeing enough out of Bo Nix right now, to be straight up honest with you all," Rich said, adding that Kurt Warner would have his two cents on that.
Rich also shared who just missed. He considered the 3-1 Giants and the 3-1 Browns, but asked himself whether he would take either over the Raiders right now. He would not. He thought about 2-2 New England and 2-2 Dallas and could not do it.
"This is my power rankings," Rich said, borrowing a little Billy Joel. "I don't care what you say anymore."
