The HILARIOUS Way 49ers Brass Reacted to the Rams Acquiring Myles Garrett

John Lynch has a ritual. Every offseason the 49ers general manager reads a John Wooden book, and every offseason he finds something in there worth passing along.

This year's selection was a good one. Don't spend any time losing sleep over the opposition. Make the opposition lose sleep thinking about you.

Lynch shared the words of the Wizard of Westwood with Kyle Shanahan. And at that exact moment, on the television in the room, news popped that the Rams had pulled off the trade for Myles Garrett.

Shanahan's response, as relayed by 49ers insider Matt Maiocco on The Rich Eisen Show, was two words long. The first was an expletive. The second was "John Wooden."

The timing is what makes it. Not the reaction, which is the reaction any coach in the NFC West would have had. The timing. Lynch is mid-sentence delivering a message about not worrying what the other guys are doing, and the other guys are on the screen behind him landing Myles Garrett.

Maiocco was in the middle of answering whether the 49ers believe Aaron Donald is coming back. His read was that the building assumes it.

"I think everybody kind of feels that," Maiocco said. "I think that they feel like just, you know, bring it on."

Bring it on is a nice sentiment in late July. It is also the only available sentiment, because there is no version of this where San Francisco talks its way out of the problem. The Rams added Garrett. Rich noted that Garrett landing in Los Angeles is potentially the very thing that pulls Donald out of retirement. And all of it is happening in a division that was won last season by the defending Super Bowl champions, who are not the Rams.

That is the part worth sitting with. Los Angeles is stacking talent on top of talent in a division that already produced last year's champion, and the reigning champion is not the Rams.

Lynch was not wrong to hand Shanahan the Wooden quote. He just picked a rough afternoon to do it.
