Rich Weighs In on the Vikings’ JJ McCarthy-Kyler Murray QB Competition

J.J. McCarthy did not get the memo about quarterback room diplomacy.

When asked about competing with Kyler Murray in Minnesota, the young signal-caller described the two of them sitting on opposite sides of the QB room like students in a classroom, each listening to the same teacher but not exactly bonding over it. Rich caught the contrast immediately: "That sounds like it was like, 'Huh?'"

The contrast with Murray's answer was hard to miss. Murray gave what Rich called "an 8-year veteran answer," something along the lines of everyone working hard, learning from each other, great competitive room. Polished. Practiced. Exactly what you say when you've been in this league long enough to know the tape is always rolling.

McCarthy went a different direction.

"Yeah, he sits on one side, I sit on the other side, and it's up to the coaches to coach us." Rich's crew compared it to a Goodfellas scene: one guy goes one way, the other goes the other way, and the coaches are left wondering what they're supposed to do with any of it.

Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell addressed the whole thing and kept his footing. He called the room "professional" and "positive" and gave credit to Carson and quarterbacks coach Josh McCown for managing the dynamic. He also made clear he was not making much of the McCarthy comments. "I didn't make a lot out of it," O'Connell said.

Rich read between the lines on that one. O'Connell said "professional," not warm. And he notably did not contradict what McCarthy described. "He can't undercut nine," Rich pointed out, a nod to the reality that walking back a starter's comments in public helps no one.

So whose version of the room is closer to the truth? Rich and the crew landed on McCarthy. A young player who is basically saying what he is thinking. No filter yet. Rich put it plainly: "He reads the writing on the wall. You've got somebody like Murray in your house for at one point something million dollars a year. You're going to see what's going on with him first."

That is not pessimism. That is just how quarterback competitions work when the incumbent has a contract that size. McCarthy is not wrong to acknowledge the reality. He just might be the only one in the building willing to say it out loud.
