It is rare to get a living legend on the show, rarer still to get one calling in from a boat. Randy Moss joined Rich from the water in Minnesota, the state where it all started for him, and the Hall of Fame receiver sounded like a man enjoying every minute of it.
"I'm just out here still chasing 10 right now," Moss said. He was after smallmouths, out on Rookie of the Year, his Minnesota Vikings-themed setup. It was, by his own account, a great day to be fishing.
The fishing is now a show, too. Chasing 10 is built around the hunt for a 10-pound bass, and Moss explained why that number matters. In the bass world, the first question is always what's your biggest. "If you're not talking about 10-plus or better, it's really not a conversation," he said. So he put together something for fishing fans and football fans alike, touring the country with celebrities on his boat, making memories, and chasing that 10-plus pounder.
What is his own personal best? Moss wasn't telling. "You have to watch the show," he said, laughing. The series has its own YouTube channel, and there's more at chasing10.com.
The guest list is already loaded. Moss has gone three deep, including a taping with the Kelce brothers that he called one of his favorites so far. He also landed two of the premier pass rushers in football, one who just got paid 150 over three, and another he described as the best player in the entire league, not just the best pass rusher, quarterbacks included.
There is a bigger purpose underneath the good times. Moss teamed up with a Tennessee company called Icon, which gave him the boat. He is using it to support CCF, the Children's Cancer Research Fund in Minnesota, raising money for kids and cancer research in the state. Each guest signs the boat, and at the end of the season the whole thing gets auctioned off for the cause.
That mission is personal. Moss spoke openly about battling and overcoming his own cancer fight. He recalled telling his wife, and the man above, the same thing. "Hey, when you bless me, give me my health back, Lord. I'm just going to get out here and enjoy myself." The crew he is touring with, a group he praised that includes Andrew and Ace, gets to watch him do exactly that.
Rich, who said the whole show had been praying for Moss, closed with the kind of line only he could land. If anybody was going to take cancer to the house, it was Randy Moss. Rich figured it was a five-yard hitch that Moss ran down the sideline against cancer.
It's great, Rich said, to see him looking great. Hard to argue with a man chasing 10 on a beautiful day in Minnesota.
