Flavor Flav on His Dream to Compete in Winter Olympics & Founding SHE Weekend

Flavor Flav is 67 years old and he is training for the skeleton in Park City with the intention of competing in 2030. That is not a bit. He said it out loud on the show and then defended it.

"Don't think I'm crazy at 67, but let me tell you like this," he told Rich. "Number one, in the Olympics there's no age limit to compete. Number two, I want to be known as the oldest ancient Olympian that ever was in the Olympics."

He is not promising a medal. He is promising an attempt. "Honestly, I don't think that I'm going to win a medal, but I'm going to try," Flavor Flav said. "I want to be able to say that I did compete in the Olympics. And I just want to make history. I just want to reinvent myself again."

The path there was not a strategy either. He sponsored the United States Olympic bobsled and skeleton team, tried the skeleton himself, liked it enough to join, and is now an official member of the team.

Rich, doing his job, asked whether this began on a hill in New York. It did. "Back in the day we used to go sleigh riding and I used to get on my belly and ride the sled down," Flavor Flav said. One run ended in a set of sticker bushes. "Oh my god, you had to see all the thorns in my face."

The reason he was in Vegas is the bigger story, and it started with an omission.

The United States Olympic men's and women's hockey teams both won gold this year. The men got an informal invitation to the White House. The women did not. When that got corrected after the fact, Flavor Flav said the players were not interested in a make-good invitation.

"That's when I stepped in," he said, "and I said, well, you know what, girls? I'll bring you girls out to Vegas and we can celebrate you guys the way you need to be celebrated."

That became SHE Weekend, short for Sports Hospitality and Entertainment, honoring elite female athletes and champions. It expanded past hockey to include the United States bobsled and skeleton teams.

Then it took on a life of its own. "When we put that out, it went so viral, Rich. It went so viral," Flavor Flav said. "People started reaching out, hey, how can I be part of this? How can I help?"

The help arrived in a form that suggests this is not a one-off. MGM gave the event 128 rooms. Delta Airlines is flying the athletes and their families in. Southwest has been sending athletes to the ESPYs.

Flavor Flav spent as much time thanking people as promoting himself, which tells you something about how he is treating this. The board of commissioners in Las Vegas and the people of Clark County approved the parade route and are coming down to give the athletes the key to the strip.

"What we're doing has never ever been done, number one," he said. "And number two, it's never ever been done here in Las Vegas."

Rich's summary was hard to argue with. Nobody can say Flavor Flav cannot speak things into existence.

"Everybody and they mama now is flying out here to Vegas for this thing," Flavor Flav said.
