That Time Die-Hard Giants Fan Flavor Flav Lived Out His Dream Scenario

Rich knew the exact date, which almost never happens. February 5th, 2012. Flavor Flav standing in front of the NFL Network set at Super Bowl 46 in Indianapolis, clock around his neck, rooting hard for the Giants.

Fourteen years later, Flav filled in the parts of that night Rich never got to see.

It was his first Super Bowl ever, and he brought his godson, Rashad Walker. When the Giants won, he got onto the field and ended up hugging Tom Coughlin, a moment that turned up on NFL Network's postgame show. Flav also thinks he knows how he landed those endzone seats.

"I think I also had a Super Bowl commercial out that year with Elton John for Pepsi," he said.

Rich's side is just as good. Michael Irvin looked down from the set and said, "Is that Flavor Flav down there?" Marshall Faulk came over. Steve Mariucci wanted to know why he was wearing a clock around his neck. Rich told them to take a seat, because there was a story coming.

The parade was better. Flav went as a correspondent for Fox 5 News, and when the float carrying the players rolled past, a player asked if he wanted to come up.

"I dropped the Fox 5 mic and jumped up on the float," Flav said. "I was acting like that parade was all about me."

The pride of Roosevelt, New York does not do half measures on fandom. Asked if he was always a Giants fan, Flav ran the whole list. Giants. Jets. Yankees. Mets. Liberty. Bills. Islanders. Rangers. Rich reminded him about the Knicks, and that unlocked a genuine piece of news. Public Enemy was booked as the halftime show for a game six at Madison Square Garden that never happened, because the Knicks closed it out in Boston instead.

"I ain't mad, cuz I'm glad the Knicks won," Flav said.

Which brings up why he called in from Las Vegas in the first place. SHE Weekend started because the United States Olympic men's and women's hockey teams both won gold this year, and the men received an informal White House invitation while the women did not. When an invitation was eventually extended, the response was not warm. That is when Flav stepped in and offered to bring the athletes to Vegas and celebrate them properly.

It went viral, and then it snowballed. MGM gave him 128 rooms. Delta is flying athletes and their families in. Southwest has pitched in as well. Flav thanked the board of commissions in Las Vegas and the people of Clark County for approving his parade route and for coming out to give the athletes the key to the strip.

"What we're doing has never ever been done," he said.

Then came the part that made Rich announce he had follow-up questions. Flav sponsored the United States Olympic bobsled and skeleton team, tried the skeleton himself, liked it enough to join, and now trains in Park City as an official member. He is 67 and aiming at 2030.

"Number one, in the Olympics, there's no age limit to compete," he said. "I want to be known as the oldest ancient Olympian that ever was in the Olympics."

He is not promising a medal. He is promising an attempt, and a reinvention.

The origin story checks out, sort of. Growing up in New York, Flav went sledding on his belly, head first, and once steered straight into a patch of sticker bushes. He still remembers pulling the thorns out of his face.
