Why Taking the Michigan Football Job Was a “No-Brainer” for Kyle Whittingham

Kyle Whittingham did not agonize over Michigan. There was nothing to agonize about.

"My wife and I, if the opportunity did come, it was a no-brainer," Whittingham told Rich. "So it wasn't like, okay, well, let me think about it and consider it. It was, okay, let's go. I'm in."

That is a striking thing to hear from a coach who had just walked away from the only program most people associate him with. Whittingham stepped down at Utah on his own terms, and he was careful about the vocabulary then and he is careful about it now.

"I felt like Utah, we'd done just about everything we could there, and we had a nice run. Time for somebody else to be able to have the opportunity to lead the program," he said. "So I stepped down. Didn't use the word retirement. And still don't."

He also did not walk away with a plan to walk back in. Whittingham said he had not ruled out coaching again, and that there were roughly half a dozen schools he could not have turned down if the opening happened to appear. Michigan was on that list. Then the sequence of events did what it did.

"The stars aligned," he said. "The things that happened and transpired, and the opportunity to interview for this job, it just seemed to all fit. It all fit in place, and here I am."

Ask him what made Michigan one of the six and the answer is not sentimental. It is an inventory.

"This place has got everything," Whittingham said. "You talk about resources, winningest program in college football history, the tradition, the history, the academics. The academics here are incredible. It was just attractive really from every angle."

He is equally blunt about the part of the modern job that has nothing to do with football. Speaking at the Champions Circle event, Whittingham did not soften what a collective means to a roster in 2026.

"They're vital," he said. "In this day and age of college football, it's all about NIL and having the funds to put a roster together. And without an entity like Champions Circle, you got no chance."

The season is essentially on top of him. Coaches report early next week, players midweek, fall camp follows, and the opener is September 5. Rich wanted to know what it will feel like to put a headset on in the Big House for the first time as the home coach. Whittingham, who has coached in that stadium three times as a visitor, was not interested in the goosebumps version.

"Coaching's coaching," he said. "You can't be in awe of the crowd or the surroundings or any of that. You just get zoned in and you go into that mode of just analyzing the game and making decisions."

Rich did press him on the one thing Michigan fans are going to keep pressing him on. Whittingham and Urban Meyer have been close for more than 20 years, and Rich would like that to end immediately.

"I'm molding him," Whittingham said. "It's a little bit of give and take. We've got a few go blues out of him over the past year."

He also acknowledged the timing is complicated, with Michigan's athletic director on the way out. His answer there sounded like a man who has been through enough cycles to know what he can and cannot control.

"That's college football. People come and go," Whittingham said. "You just got to block everything out and minimize distractions and just stay focused."
