Todd Monken's first OTAs as head coach of the Cleveland Browns are not even a week old. His press conferences are already required viewing. Rich dedicated a segment to walking through the highlights and proposing that Monken get his own recurring segment on the show.
The first clip the show pulled was about quarterback play, specifically about Shedeur Sanders. Monken did not lead with Deshaun Watson, the player most of Cleveland is still expecting to be the Week 1 starter. He led with Shedeur.
"I shouldn't say surprised. I think more people would be surprised Deshaun's athleticism shows up. Obviously he's had that, but he's had his injuries that have set him back," Monken said. "But that's been, I wouldn't say surprised, but it's exciting to see. It's a weapon for him. It's one of his superpowers, is that athleticism."
Then he pivoted.
"And I think Shedeur's come miles in terms of his progressions, getting the ball out. His understanding of concepts. I think he's really, really come a long way."
The room read it the way most Cleveland fans will read it. Monken started on Watson, then could not help glowing about Shedeur. Rich noted that if Sanders blossoms into the franchise quarterback under this regime, the storyline of the season writes itself.
The second clip was the one that made Monken a star in the room. A reporter asked the new head coach whether he liked the defense's aggression that day. Monken answered without filtering.
"Yeah. We threw interceptions in seven-on-seven, for God's sakes," Monken said. "I mean, who does that? There's no pass rush. I mean, it's embarrassing."
The room laughed for thirty seconds.
"This guy's my new favorite coach in the league," Chris said.
Rich played it twice. The second listen was funnier than the first.
The third clip was about Myles Garrett. A reporter asked if Monken had had any face-to-face conversations with Garrett yet, the team's All-Pro defensive end whose contract status remains a major Cleveland storyline.
"Myles? Yeah. No," Monken said.
The room debated whether Monken had answered "yes" or "no" with the cleanest non-answer the show has produced this offseason. Rich noted the longer the lack of contact lasts into the summer, the more concerning the Garrett situation becomes. Bonuses, the room noted, do not have to be paid until later. There is a real timing problem building.
Then the room pivoted to the larger creative idea. Rich proposed that, if these press conferences continue to deliver at this rate, the show needs a recurring weekly Todd Monken segment.
"Late Night with Todd Monken," Chris said.
"Two drink minimum," someone added.
"Monkening Around," another voice offered.
Rich said he would think about it. The bar Monken has set is, in the room's view, the highest of any first-year NFL head coach hire this cycle. Cleveland fans, the room concluded, will at minimum get must-see television out of the experience.
Whether the team produces wins is a separate question. The press conferences are already winning.
