The Rich Eisen Show’s Chris Brockman Turns a Cynical Eye from LeBron to Chargers' QB Justin Herbert

Hour two opened with breaking news from across the street. Justin Herbert popped the question to Madison Beer, and the Chargers tweeted it out.

Rich set it up as a trend. Josh Allen married a very successful actress. Travis Kelce, the future Hall of Fame tight end, married a very famous English teacher, as the show insisted on describing her. Russell Wilson got a mention. And now Herbert.

"Three's a charm," Rich said.

The photographs were, by unanimous agreement, beautiful. The Chargers posted ones Beer did not put on her own Instagram. Someone suggested it was a collab. Of course it was a collab.

And then Chris got to work.

More engagements than playoff wins, he offered.

The room turned on him instantly, which is roughly the point of Chris. Rich noted that a viewer had come up to him the day before at the Michigan Champions Circle event and said he watches the show every day, and that he had expected Chris to be nicer after getting married. Instead, the guy reported, he seems angrier.

"I'm not," Chris said. "I'm much happier."

Nobody bought it, mostly because the receipts were sitting right there. Rich reminded him of the LeBron take. You were the guy who said LeBron's not gonna be a factor, Rich said. We are seeing this.

Chris tried to defend the engagement line on technical grounds. "That's just a factual statement," he said. "But that would be factual for anybody."

Which is true, and also entirely beside the point Rich was making. This is Herbert's personal life. This is a lovely moment for him.

"I love love," Chris said. "I'm glad that he has found love."

He did not sound glad. Rich told him so. And then came the argument that should have landed, the one about Chris having just traveled that same path himself and therefore owing the man some grace.

"I am happy," Chris said, in the tone of a person who is not.

The best material came from the name. Maybe this was the missing ingredient, Rich offered. Maybe just add beer. How many men in life are like, you know what, let's have a beer?

"That's about 50/50 for the beer working," Chris said. "Like sometimes the beer is good, most times it's not."

Somebody volunteered that they have a cousin who has beer and it did not do well for him. The bit had officially outrun its own logic, which is usually when the show is at its best.

Rich tried to land the plane on a sincere note, wishing a mazel tov to the neighbor across the street, and offering congratulations to Herbert and Beer.

Chris got one more in before the segment ended. Maybe at the end of the season we'll say that too.

Rich, for the record, sided with Chris on the fundamental question of whether Chris has gotten meaner since the wedding. Whoever that guy at the Michigan event was, he was not describing the version of Chris that says he is happier now.
