Taylor Twellman’s Message to Everyone Irate about World Cup Hydration Breaks

After playing along with the show's running hydration-break bit, complete with a fake call from his coach about wearing pants for his next hit, Taylor Twellman got serious about why World Cup hydration breaks are driving fans crazy. His message: the problem isn't the break. It's the broadcast.

Twellman started by acknowledging the origin. The breaks didn't begin this tournament. They started in 2022 because it was 105 degrees, and as a player-safety measure they're absolutely legitimate. Watching a game in Toronto, he noticed 64 degrees and 60 percent humidity on his screen, which tells you the breaks have drifted from their purpose. Now, he said, it's capitalism, and broadcasters should just own it.

His rebuttal, drawn from calling games with countless hydration breaks himself, is simple: stay in the stadium. A 70-second hydration break is no different than a trainer coming on for an injury. If the broadcast uses that window to give viewers the coaches' conversations, the players, the tactics, and the in-game changes, it doesn't take away from the match at all. What infuriates people is leaving the atmosphere entirely for a Michelob Ultra ad with Christian Pulisic and Messi, then coming back, which makes a two-half game suddenly feel like four quarters. That, Twellman said, is the Americanization of it.

So Rich pitched the fix: keep the broadcast put, maybe just hold a shot of the scoreboard. Twellman insisted that doesn't take away nearly as much, and Rich told him to float the idea up to Pico Boulevard, suggesting he credit it to Rich rather than Taylor.

The segment closed where it started, in comedy, with the gang needling Twellman over the correct pronunciation of the country that hosted the 2022 tournament, a debate between Cutter and Qatar that everyone has butchered enough times to call it a wash.
