Rich Reacts to Jayden Daniels’ WILD Legal Beef with LSU Over Giving His #5 to CB DJ Pickett

The alert hit Rich's phone and the reaction cycled through four different positions before he finished the article. What is Jayden Daniels' malfunction. Actually, kind of don't blame him. Wait, doesn't he have bigger fish to fry. And finally, what is the matter with LSU.

Here is the fight. Daniels went after LSU legally over the use of his name, image and likeness after the school gave his number five to cornerback DJ Pickett, one of the top corners in the class that signed in December of 2024. Pickett wore three as a freshman and put up three interceptions, 37 tackles and a sack. Now he is in five, and the photographs of him in it were taken in front of a Daniels number five jersey LSU itself put on display.

The family statement did not soften anything. "The Daniels family is deeply disappointed and feels profoundly disrespected by LSU's decision to give Jayden's number to another player," it read, adding that Daniels and his family "had every reason to believe that his number would remain a meaningful part of his LSU legacy."

Then the rules get interesting. LSU has retired exactly four football jerseys, Billy Cannon's 20, Tommy Casanova, Jerry Stovall and Charles Alexander, with Bert Jones' seven going up on November 14. The school's policy requires an athlete to be five years removed from competition and to have demonstrated "truly unusual and outstanding accomplishments such as winning a Heisman Trophy." It also says any number retired after January 1, 2007 does not stop a current athlete from wearing it, at the head coach's discretion. Cannon's 20 is the only number nobody else can touch.

Meanwhile, Joe Burrow's nine has sat untouched since he left, which is the piece that stings.

Rich drew the distinction anyway. Burrow had maybe the greatest college season a quarterback has ever had, undefeated and a national champion, with Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase catching passes. Daniels won the Heisman on a nine-and-three team. He also owns a stack of LSU records, the first Tigers quarterback to rush for a thousand yards among them.

The coaching handoff is where this gets genuinely funny. Brian Kelly told ESPN he believed five had been promised to Pickett during recruiting, but he declined to issue it because Daniels was not on board. Kelly got the gate. Lane Kiffin walked in, heard the number had been promised, and handed it over. Kiffin was never going to torch his own locker room for a quarterback he never coached.

Daniels' camp has escalated further. Matt Moscona reported that sources confirmed the camp wants LSU to return its copy of the Heisman Trophy, which LSU has no intention of doing. Daniels contacted school leadership before fall camp, and Kiffin has spoken to him personally.

The counterpoint on the show was that this is a few seconds of Daniels' day, not a distraction from Washington. Family and lawyers handle it. He is not skipping reps with Stefon Diggs to file paperwork.

Michael Irvin offers the better model, and Rich brought him up unprompted. Irvin's position on CeeDee Lamb wearing 88 is that a retired number in the rafters gets a nod and then fans look back down at the game, while an active player wearing it keeps the legacy alive, provided that player is excellent. The petty upside, per Irvin, is that when Lamb drops one, somebody in the stands says Irvin never would have.

Turn that around and Daniels has a club instead of a grievance. Pickett picks off a pass in five, and the fives at LSU start meaning something.
