Tyreek Hill is lurking. He is rehabbing, he is posting workout videos, and now he is posting about the weather. Rich has a pretty good idea where that should lead.
First, some perspective. Rich reminded everyone how bad Hill's knee injury was last year. "To call it ugly is an understatement," he said. "The fact that we're sitting here at this part of the year entertaining the idea of him potentially coming back and playing football is remarkable."
Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has been making the rounds and "dropped some seeds." Rich admitted you sometimes have to wonder what to believe from Rosenhaus, recalling the time he was talking to no one on the phone to make it seem like Willis McGahee was on the clock. "Sure enough, he did get a first-round draft choice out of it," Rich said. "He is that good at his job."
Then Hill dropped his own nugget about an hour and a half before the segment: "I think I'm ready for some cold weather."
So began the show's tour of the cold-weather map. Rich floated Buffalo, which would be "a heck of a destination for him in the division." Pittsburgh. Baltimore, which "can get cold in B City," though the crew argued it gets colder further up 95. Philadelphia and New England got quick passes. Someone suggested the Giants as a team that needs him, which drew a quick "Why would he join a team that's under 500?"
Kansas City sparked the longest debate. One voice argued the Chiefs need him because they no longer push the ball downfield the way they did when Hill was there. Rich wasn't so sure about a 3-0 team, and noted Hill has "some history" with Kansas City that might make him unwelcome, although "water could be under the bridge." The crew also checked Denver, Green Bay, where Jayden Reed is headed for season-ending surgery but Christian Watson already takes the top off a defense, and Chicago, where Kalif Raymond has looked good. Cincinnati is cold but does not need him. Indianapolis and Minneapolis are cold but play indoors. The Chargers, Rams, Raiders, Arizona, Atlanta, Carolina and New Orleans were scratched for warm weather or domes.
Rich made a case for San Francisco even though it is "not technically cold weather," because the 49ers "could really use him." Someone added the line about the coldest winter being a summer in San Francisco. Rich, still smarting from having an Iowa Hawkeyes helmet put on his head, could not resist a little dig at San Francisco anyway. "I might be still bitter," he said.
The crew agreed Hill seems close. "He's posting workout videos and I was pretty shocked to see how well he's moving," one of them said. Someone even admitted to picking Hill up in a fantasy league already. Rich's view was simple: do your due diligence on his health, then "a million percent" take the chance.
Then Rich read between the lines. He took the post as a sign Hill "might be down the road with a team that's already kicked the tire and they're a cold weather team," and that "he's got something cooking." But he was not ruling out a warm-weather landing spot, either.
And the franchise that should be all over him "like white on rice"? "The Las Vegas Raiders," Rich said. "Giving a weapon to take the top of the defense off in this division for this offense."
The logic runs through the franchise's DNA. "Al Davis was a speed guy. That's it. Throw deep, baby," Rich said. He acknowledged that is what a man who has not been alive for a long time would do, "but still his son in charge. Definitely not cold in Las Vegas." Someone helpfully noted number 10 is available for the Raiders.
"What an addition to any team the Tyreek Hill of Tyreek Hillness would be," Rich said. One member of the crew added, "I'd like to have him this week."
That is because this week is big. Patrick Mahomes brings a 3-0 Chiefs team into Allegiant Stadium, where Kansas City has lost only once in seven previous visits, not counting the Super Bowl. Rich also took a moment to object that Las Vegas has no plaque or sign post for Moe Greene, "even though he created it." "What the hell's going on?" he asked.
It may be a little too early to put Hill in silver and black. But Rich has made his pick, and it is not in cold weather.
