Panthers GM Dan Morgan Wants to Shorten the NFL Draft Even More

Eight minutes on the clock in the first round is too long, in Dan Morgan's opinion. The Carolina Panthers GM joined the show and added himself to the list of executives who would speed the draft up.

The Panthers landed offensive tackle Tyler Monroe with their pick this year. Morgan was happy with how that worked out.

"Luckily Monroe fell to us, and we're able to get a great left tackle," Morgan said. "Guy that's young, and he's only going to get better."

Rich pressed on the running time. Was Morgan happy with the eight-minute window?

"I think it could be even less," Morgan said. "Usually you kind of know who you're going to take at the time. We obviously had to sit there and wait, but you have your group of players that you know you're interested in, and you know you're going to turn the card in if they're there."

Rich pointed out he is the second GM to say this on the show, alongside Howie Roseman and possibly Chris Ballard.

"Yeah, I think I would," Morgan said when asked if he would actually go faster.

The case Morgan made was that the team's homework is already done.

"Most teams, I think they know who they're going to take at the time," Morgan said. "You have so much time during the draft process to kind of figure out who you like and who you're dialed in on. By the time our pick came, we knew who we were going to take. So I don't think you need that much time. We usually call those guys right away."

Rich pushed it further. As a draft host, he likes the time. Fewer minutes means less talking.

"Give me five minutes," Rich proposed.

Morgan was in.

"That's it," Morgan said. "Yeah."

Day three is where the real compression case lives.

"What about three minutes in day three?" Rich said.

Morgan agreed there too.

"That'd be great. I think it'd be good, you know?" Morgan said.

His read on the entire process is that it does not need the air it currently gets.

"Especially our board where you're drafting best player available, it's pretty easy the way that we stack it," Morgan said. "When our pick comes, we're taking the guy that's best player available at the time. It's not rocket science. At the same time, you have to prepare and you have to make sure your board's the way that you want it and have confidence in it."
