One week earlier, Rich had been speechless. This time, he came back with a better glass, as promised to his wife, Susie, and plenty to say.
"Today I've got words," he said.
The difference was his Wolverines. After an opener that left him with nothing, Michigan looked much better, and so did its quarterback. Oklahoma came into Michigan Stadium, Rich said, "and saw a great defense and a kid QB with some resolve." He gave credit to the staff as well. "A coach coached them up."
Rich called it a great win and noted what made it rare: Michigan's first win in a long time against a top 15 team while unranked at home. "It felt good all day."
He didn't think the day could get much better. Then he explained the household rule. "Taught my kids a long time ago, we root for two teams around here. Michigan and whoever plays Ohio State."
That rule put Rich somewhere he never expected to be. "I didn't think I'd be here right now toasting McConaughey and Sark and Arch and the Mannings and Bevo and all y'all," he said. "But here I am."
The reason was Texas. Michigan won, and Ohio State lost, blowing a 20-point lead.
"As we say in Ann Arbor, it's great to be a Michigan Wolverine," Rich said, raising his glass. "Great day in college football."
He did have one eye on the next morning. Week one of the NFL season means NFL GameDay Morning at 9 a.m. Eastern, and Rich noted it is his 15th year hosting that show.
For the moment, though, he wanted to soak it in. "Go Blue."
