Jay Wright Talks ‘Nova Knicks’ NBA Title, Jalen Brunson & More with Rich

Jay Wright did not come on The Rich Eisen Show to talk in generalities. He came to explain, in specific detail, how a college program in Philadelphia became the spine of an NBA contender in New York, and why the kid he almost sent to the pros a year early turned into one of the most relentless players in the league.

Rich opened by playing a clip of Jalen Brunson talking about pressure, and Wright recognized it instantly. Brunson described real pressure as watching his dad work out three times a day in the summer just to earn a training camp deal on an unguaranteed contract. To Wright, that mindset is the whole player. "No fear of failure is exactly how he approaches every day, every game, every possession," Wright said. Miss a shot that might cost the team the game, and Brunson comes back to the next one with a clear mind. "He's just going to trust his work."

Wright traced it back to the recruiting trip. Brunson's mother, Sandra, did something no other parent ever did with him. She walked him into her son's bedroom, where the walls were covered in motivational quotes and a headline from the last game the team lost, swapped out every few days. "It was incredible," Wright said.

The coaching point at Villanova was about role. Brunson arrived as a scorer, and Wright had to teach him that some nights the job is top assist guy or locking up the other team's best guard. Then it became how to lead while making everyone want to follow. After Brunson's sophomore year, Wright told his parents the kid was NBA-ready. His mother said he didn't have his degree yet. His father said he wasn't good enough defensively. So Brunson stayed, won another championship, and got his degree.

The scouts, Wright said, had him pegged as a career backup. Wright told them otherwise, though he stopped short of predictions. "I never said he would be Michael Jordan, Kobe-esque like he was in game five." He pointed to the play against Victor Wembanyama, where Brunson hesitated, bumped the seven-footer with his shoulder, and finished at the rim. "I thought to myself, he's figured it out."

The Nova Knicks core is no accident, and Wright credited Leon Rose for understanding what each piece needed to be. Josh Hart, a near national player of the year at Villanova, has embraced being "a servant to my teammates" while staying good enough to drop 26 in a playoff game. Mikal Bridges, the guy who once drilled an iso three to win a Big East title, guards anybody and craves winning over accolades. Wright even revealed an Alex Rodriguez wrinkle: Rodriguez, a friend of his connected to the Timberwolves, wouldn't part with Karl-Anthony Towns unless they got Donte DiVincenzo, which is how that domino fell. The secret sauce, Wright said, is the parents. All raised the same way, all willing to listen to the coach and do what's best for the team.

Then Rich asked the point-blank question. Did the Knicks reach out about bringing Wright back to coach? They did. He talked to Rose, a fellow Philly-area guy, and told him straight: "I know I'm done." Wright wasn't sure he'd have been good for that group now anyway after four years of them taking everything he had. He praised Mike Brown as perfect for a mature team, citing the gutsy call to play Jose Alvarado late in game four. Wright still texts the guys constantly, not about basketball, about mentality and life.
