Is Brian Kelly to Blame for This Whole Jayden Daniels/LSU #5 Beef???

Somebody promised a kid a number and then did not give it to him. Everything downstream of that, the cease and desist letters, the lawyers, the Instagram statements, the Joe Burrow follow-up question in Cincinnati, traces back to that one broken promise.

DJ Pickett has worn number five since he was four years old. LSU told him during recruiting that five would be his, and he signed. Then he showed up and Brian Kelly told him he was wearing three. Kelly is gone now, and Pickett is wearing five.

Jayden Daniels wore five with distinction at LSU. He was wearing it when he won the Heisman, and he was told nobody else would wear it. So a cease and desist arrived from his camp, and after the show went off the air on Thursday, Daniels posted a statement.

"I've been locked in on training camp, and that's been my number one focus," Daniels wrote. "I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU, and I'm proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there. Obviously, there are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU, and my hope is that it will get done privately. My sole personal focus is on Commanders football."

Chris said what plenty of people were already thinking, which is that a quarterback in a new offense should not have his head in a jersey-number fight. The fairer read is that this is a team thing rather than a Daniels thing, which is its own third rail, because his team is essentially run by his mother. He is not skipping reps with Stefon Diggs over this. Somebody on his behalf is making the stink.

Pickett handled his end about as gracefully as an underclassman can. "I wore the number my whole life since I was four years old. It was a number I was promised," he said. "I will wish Jayden the best. Good player, and he did real good here, so that's all."

Do not put this on him. Nobody outside Louisiana had heard of Pickett until two days ago, and now he carries a number that comes with a Heisman attached to it. Fans on team Jayden are going to be waiting for a missed step, a trip, a blown coverage. That is not fair, and fandom is not sensible.

Lane Kiffin did not think he had a decision to make. "It was promised to the kid," Kiffin said, explaining that he researched it with the family and the representatives before landing where he landed. "I'm not going to judge something that I wasn't here for, but when a kid's promised something to come to a school, he should wear it."

Then somebody asked the money question. What about nine?

"There's a lot to numbers, and whether they're retired, whether they're not, and different versions," Kiffin said. "I don't have an answer." He was not going anywhere near that hypothetical.

Burrow got asked about it after the preseason game against the Lions and had almost nothing, saying he had heard about it a couple hours earlier and did not know enough to have thoughts. Asked whether LSU had ever told him nine was safe, Burrow said they told him they would not use it again, then added the part that makes this whole thing so combustible. "You never know what happens."

Here is the uncomfortable math underneath all of it. Nine threw 60 touchdowns and won a national championship, which makes nine more untouchable than five. The Daniels camp is entitled to reject that framing, but it is not going to change the outcome. Kiffin is not taking a number back from a player he needs to win games with.

LSU opens against Clemson on September 5 at home. Dabo will be there. So will the five.
