GMFB's Jamie Erdahl: How the Vikings' QB Instability Impacts Justin Jefferson

The question was Kyler Murray or JJ McCarthy. Jamie Erdahl refused the premise entirely.

"I'm team Justin Jefferson," Erdahl said.

This is a Minnesota native talking about a Minnesota problem, and the frustration in the answer was not about which quarterback wins a training camp job. It was about the receiver who has spent years absorbing the consequences of the Vikings never solving the position.

"That man is such a professional," Erdahl said of Jefferson. "Justin Jefferson has shown up for whatever has happened."

Erdahl was careful not to blame the front office for malice. The description was messier and more familiar than that. A one-year deal for Sam Darnold here, a draft pick spent on McCarthy there, and suddenly the options collapse. "They just they they they backed themselves into this parking spot essentially."

The part that stood out was the acknowledgment that patience has a limit, even for a player who does not publicly test it. "I think you're at the end of the rope with Justin essentially," Erdahl said. "Like if he were to throw a fit, which I know he wouldn't cuz he is a professional, I would be like, yeah, that tracks."

The reasoning is not complicated. Jefferson is the franchise. "You are the brand, you are the Vikings," Erdahl said, describing a team with a beautifully historic list of names at the position and a receiver whose only real ambition is to keep that list going.

So what does Minnesota owe him? Not a specific name. Just a resolution. "Just give him a guy. I don't care who the guy is. I really don't. Just find the one."

That framing led backward to the decision Erdahl still cannot get past. Two seasons ago Darnold went 14-3, lost in the playoffs, and left for Seattle. Asked whether the Vikings should have kept him, the answer came fast.

"No, I think we should have kept him."

Erdahl declined to pretend to know the cap math on the three-year, roughly $100 million deal Darnold got. The objection was more basic. Minnesota had a defense Erdahl called unbelievable and offensive weapons everywhere, and the one missing piece was already in the building. "I don't think you saw enough from what you had to really just say" that he was not the answer.

There was also a read on how Darnold felt about it. Erdahl thinks he liked being in Minnesota, thinks players enjoy playing for Kevin O'Connell, and thinks the presence of one of the best receivers in football should have been worth something in the negotiation. "You don't think he could have stayed? Even if it was not for the same, but if you would just shown him some love."

The general manager from that era is gone now, and Erdahl was not interested in assigning fault. The urgency is the point, because the window is not sitting still.

"It's a big piece, but you're one piece away. And everyone's getting better."

The division makes that literal. Chicago was a manageable problem and is not anymore. Green Bay is Green Bay. Detroit still has Dan Campbell, Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jamaal Williams. And that is only the north.

"The NFC as a whole is a nightmare."
