When the PGA Tour unveiled the biggest structural overhaul in its modern history, the graphic was so packed with changes the type barely fit on screen. Two parallel championship tours, promotion, relegation, the works, all arriving in 2028. Collin Morikawa's reaction to all of it came down to one word.
"Excitement," he told guest host Andrew Siciliano on the show.
Morikawa's enthusiasm is rooted in something golfers have rarely had: certainty. Morikawa zeroed in on schedule clarity as the real win. "The one thing we haven't had in professional golf is just a clear-cut schedule," he said. Under the new system, anyone holding a PGA Tour card in 2028, whether on the Championship Series or the Challenger Series, will know exactly what they are playing.
That predictability matters more than outsiders might think. Morikawa acknowledged the appeal of the tour's traditional meritocracy and openness, but he does not romanticize the cost of it. "The stress of waiting at tournaments isn't fun," he said. Players want to build out their calendars the way athletes in every other sport do. And the meritocracy does not disappear under the new format. "At the end of the day, you play great golf, you're going to be where you want to be."
Asked whether he had heard any pushback in the locker room, Morikawa said no, and found the silence telling. "There hasn't been as much talk amongst us players as you might think, and I think that's a good thing." To him, the quiet is a sign the changes are landing as improvements rather than threats.
He also kept the audience in view. Many of the changes, Morikawa noted, are being made for fans, and he hopes they enjoy the result. The format promises to put the top players against each other more often, with slightly bigger fields and cuts, elements he described as natural to the game.
For a player who has built his name on precision and consistency, a system that rewards exactly that while finally handing everyone a knowable schedule reads like an easy sell. Two years out, Morikawa is not bracing for it. He is looking forward to it.
