When Browns news breaks, The Miz reacts, and he does not wait for solid ground to do it. The lifelong Cleveland fan posted his feelings about the Myles Garrett trade from 35,000 feet, roughly 24 minutes after it broke.
So the question on the show was whether every Browns fan feels the way The Miz does. Rich is not sure they should.
"I think this is fine. I think this is what the Browns need to do," Rich said. A voice on the desk agreed.
His reasoning starts with an honest assessment of the roster. "They're not ready to win now," Rich said, returning to the phrase again and again. Garrett is a win-now piece, and the Rams just proved exactly that by trading for him. Cleveland is not at that stage.
The goal, in Rich's framing, is bigger than respectability. He wants the Browns to eventually win the whole damn shooting match, the kind of long-awaited title that Cubs fans finally got, the one Bills fans and Lions fans are aching for now. By the time Cleveland is truly ready for that, Garrett, who Rich figured to be around 32, would be on the wrong side of the timeline anyway.
What the Browns got back matters to that math. The return is headlined by Jared Verse and a haul of picks. Rich made the point that a year ago the package might have been multiple firsts and no player as good as Verse, who, as the desk noted, had seven and a half sacks last season. Yes, Garrett just broke the sack record. The bet is on the youth Cleveland has stockpiled over the last two years growing up together.
Not everyone on set bought the optimism, and not everyone thinks Rich gets to argue the point. As one colleague noted, you cannot push back on The Miz like that, because his is the firsthand pain of an actual Browns fan.
Rich pushed back anyway. He also has no illusions about where The Miz lands. The next time he calls in, he will still have the Browns winning Super Bowls.
