Every so often the win-loss game finds a caller who refuses to drop a single one that matters. Harry from Georgia, predicting the Miami Dolphins' season game by game, may be the most optimistic Dolphins fan the show has ever put on the air.
He came out swinging. Opening in Las Vegas against the Raiders, Harry promised a win, undeterred that he was about to make the host's father sad. One and oh.
A trip to face the San Francisco 49ers cooled him off, briefly. "Probably going to lose that one," he admitted. It was one of the few times all segment he conceded anything.
Then the Chiefs came to Miami, and the optimism turned personal. "We're beating the Chiefs, man. I hate the Chiefs," Harry said. A road game in Minnesota was no problem either, on family grounds. His brother is a Vikings fan, which apparently guarantees a Dolphins win.
The disrespect was where it got fun. Asked about a trip to face Robert Saleh's Jets, Harry did not hesitate. "Jets are buns. We're going to win that one." Even Chris Brockman's beloved Patriots could not scare him, in either of Miami's meetings with New England.
He was not completely unreasonable. He handed the Detroit Lions a win over his Dolphins, expected a cold day in Buffalo to go badly because Malik Willis is the only one used to the weather, and predicted a very Dolphins kind of heartbreak against the Bears: up 20 at halftime, then undone late by Caleb Williams.
The masterpiece came when Buffalo visited Miami. Harry hedged at first, offering a tentative win. The host was not satisfied and pushed him to say it like he meant it.
So he did. The Dolphins, Harry declared, would beat the Buffalo Bills 72 to nothing.
By the time he reached the season finale in New England, there was only one way it could go. "We are going to beat them," he said.
Add it all up, and Harry had Miami winning 13 games. Whether the Dolphins agree is a problem for the fall. For one phone call, the schedule never stood a chance.
