AJ Brown ran his youth football camp in Philadelphia on Tuesday, and the way he closed it out has Rich watching the tape.
The Eagles wide receiver gathered the campers and parents at the end of the day, took a bullhorn, and delivered the kind of speech that lands different when there are trade rumors hanging over your name.
"Listen, I want to say thank you all," Brown told the crowd. "Thank you all for bringing your kids. I had an amazing time. It was fun. We played hard. We competed. And I love you all. I don't care what you hear out there. I love you all. You understand? It's love. All right, we're going to break it down. Eagles on three."
He broke it down by saying "Eagles." That part, Rich allowed, was at least on brand for an Eagles camp.
What he could not let go of was the framing. The "I don't care what you hear out there" line. The "I love you all" repetition. The fact that someone in the crowd shouted "don't get traded" on the second play of the audio. To Rich's ear, it sounded like a farewell.
Brockman pushed back. The man hosted his own youth camp. He showed up. He competed with the kids. He thanked the parents. None of that, Brockman argued, is the behavior of someone clearing out his locker. If Brown were getting traded this week, the camp would have been canceled. The fact that it happened is, to Brockman, evidence that nothing is happening.
Rich did not buy it. Canceling a camp because of trade rumors that have not landed yet, he said, would itself be the bigger story. A Philly parent who signed their kid up for AJ Brown's camp would not appreciate getting refunded over speculation.
The bit picked up steam from there. Mike Del Tufo speculated about why Brown might be cooling on Philadelphia, including not getting the football enough. The room cycled through reasons Brown might be heading elsewhere. New England came up because Brockman had teed up a "Future Patriot" tag from the top of the segment.
"He didn't say Patriots on three," Rich said. "Well, yeah, that would have been a little weird. In Philly."
The closer was a list of unrelated coincidences that everyone in the room agreed they were absolutely reading too much into. Why are the Celtics taking all those threes. Why is Ben Affleck following someone on Instagram. Why is Brockman asking TJ about the Mets. The bit ran long because it kept landing.
Howie Roseman has said Brown is an Eagle. Whether the bullhorn speech says the same thing, Rich left to the audience.
