Commanders WR Terry McLaurin: How Business Impacted His 2025 Season

Terry McLaurin does not shy away from the honest answer. When Rich asked him directly whether the business side of football wrecked his 2025 season, McLaurin didn't deflect.

"I think that's a fair question," McLaurin told Rich. "It definitely intersected. I think a lot of people say when the business and football intersect, it can definitely shake up a lot of things."

It shook up plenty. McLaurin got married, took trips to Italy and the Maldives, dealt with a contract situation in the summer, and got hurt early in the year. Seven years of routine, completely disrupted. "Everything that I was so used to over the first seven years of my career was just completely different from a timing standpoint, my body, and just the business side of football," he said. "It was tough."

What stung most wasn't the money conversation itself. It was missing the spring. With a new offensive coordinator, a new defensive coordinator, and Jayden Daniels returning healthy, the team-building happening in OTAs was exactly the kind of foundation McLaurin couldn't afford to skip. "I think spring everything is new," he said. "Building this new offense is extremely important for me to be here each and every day."

He's here now. Week two of OTAs, body feeling good, watching the offense come to life on the grass after weeks in the meeting rooms. The urgency is real and the reasoning is straightforward. "This is a business," McLaurin said. "It's a business for the player and it's a business for the team. If you don't produce, teams move on from you. When you produce at a high level as a player, you deserve to be compensated like that."

The contract is done. The distraction is gone. And McLaurin, who described his offseason as great with no setbacks and training that started right after the Super Bowl, sounds like a man who spent the winter getting right. "I grew a lot during that time," he said. "I learned a lot about myself."

For Washington, that version of McLaurin, healthy, present, and bought in on the new offense, is exactly what the team needs around Daniels heading into the season.
