Colin Hanks Imagines Tom Brady, Sean McVay, Cignetti & Others as His Stepdad

Some traditions are sacred. For Colin Hanks, the tradition is imagining NFL head coaches as stepfathers, and he brought it back to the show for another round.

The bit has real origins. Hanks was watching a football game with his dad years ago when his father looked at a head coach, Charlie Weis at Notre Dame, and wondered aloud what he would be like as a stepdad. Not long after, Tom Coughlin popped up on screen, and a tradition was born. "It brings me so much joy," Hanks said. Rich, who has hosted Hanks for 11 years across two shows, had texted him a Fiddler on the Roof tradition gif to kick it off. Topol, naturally.

Then came the lineup. First up, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, frozen mid-gesture with his arms raised. Hanks read it instantly. "What are we doing?" A stepdad walking in on a game of Settlers of Catan, equal parts accusatory and exhausted. "This is a waste of time. What are we doing?"

Next was Mike McCarthy, now with the Steelers. Hanks decided McCarthy would be the stepfather who has made peace with having no authority. "Well, that's not up to me," he said, applying it to everything from dinner plans to what to wear to the announcement press conference. Not bitter, just resigned. Rich noted McCarthy was in fact wearing a Steelers tie, which does look like it was up to him.

Bears coach Ben Johnson got the psychological treatment. In his photo, arms crossed, headset on, Hanks heard a leading question. "And?" The kind of stepdad who guilt-trips softly. "That hurt your feelings, didn't it? You felt bad after you did that, didn't you, buddy?"

Then things veered off script. A shirtless Sean McVay on vacation with his wife, apparently on the French Riviera. Hanks declined to play stepdad on that one, since the premise would make McVay's companion his mother. Instead he settled on McVay's signature reply to everything. "100%. 100%." And in a crisis, a clipped "Hundo P."

The bit was born from a college coach, so Hanks gave one his highest honor. Indiana national champion Curt Cignetti was his favorite. Based on the eyebrow-raised photo, Hanks cast Cignetti as the stepdad forever seeking confirmation. "When? When are the Stewarts coming over? When do you want me to start the grill?" A man who agrees to things, then needs to know exactly when.

The finale was Thomas Edward Brady, dressed in a leather jacket. Hanks gave him pure defiance. "So what? Yeah, I'm wearing a leather jacket. I'm your stepdad. So what? What are you going to do about it? Do your job." Rich thought Brady looked like he was in a Sprockets sketch.

Rich called it the best edition yet. Hanks agreed it keeps getting better. Tradition, as the man knows, tends to do that.
