Can We Talk about Joe Burrow Wearing an ‘I Work Here’ Hat to a Press Conference?

The fourth question on Rich's Four Downs for Cincinnati was simple: what is Joe Burrow thinking? The whole Bengals season may come down to the answer, which means every syllable and every wardrobe choice at that podium is going to get parsed.

So let's parse one. Burrow showed up to his press conference wearing a hat that reads I WORK HERE.

Give him the benefit of the doubt first. It is entirely possible a friend asked him to wear a hat, he said sure, and he never thought twice about the words on it. That is a real explanation. It is also not the explanation anyone is going to accept, because Burrow has to know by now that people are going to read his headwear like tea leaves.

Here is the thing about that phrase. Everything depends on which word you lean on.

I work here, with the weight on the first word, is a flex. This is my place. I am the man in this building.

I WORK here, with the weight in the middle, is a job description and nothing more. It is my job. That reading is harmless enough, maybe even admirable, a guy clocking in.

I work HERE, with the weight at the end, is where it gets uncomfortable. Say it out loud and it turns into the sentence every disgruntled employee has ever muttered when somebody asks them a question they cannot answer. I just work here. Don't ask me about my protection. Don't ask me why I am getting lit up. Don't ask me about any of this.

One of three interpretations is a problem, which puts the odds at 33 percent that the hat is a problem. Those are not comfortable odds in a summer when the conversation around that team is already about who is protecting the quarterback and whether the offensive line is going to hold up.

The room split about the way you would expect. Some saw a guy already angling. Rich saw a man wearing a hat.

Either way, it got screenshotted the second it hit the internet. Which is precisely the point. Burrow knows we are watching what he shows up in.
